Pinoy Chicken Sopas: Humble beginnings
Like a lot of Filipino cuisine, this delicious and delightful soup hails from our many foreign influences—in particular, our history with the Americans! The United States loves their chicken noodle soup, so much so that it has become a favorite and classic pantry staple. Campbell’s cans of chicken soup have become a pop culture icon across the world—and due to its easily beloved nature, it’s no wonder that it made its way to our shores, too.
Ironically, though, it’s worth mentioning that sopas actually comes from the Spanish word sopa, for soup! So though it may have American origins, we’ve still borrowed some Spanish to give it a name of our own.
Our Pinoy Chicken Sopas is our own local response to the classic chicken noodle soup. It makes use of the same hearty elbow macaroni, as well as the sweet and irresistible evaporated milk that makes your broth a lot creamier. Fans of both sweet and savory alike will happily dig into this favorite, slurping up bite after bite of goodness.
Tips for cooking Pinoy Chicken Sopas
We love chicken sopas as is—but did you know we could make it even better? Here are some tips on cooking Pinoy Chicken Sopas that might make this forever satisfying broth even yummier.
Like many recipes, Pinoy Chicken Sopas is rather adaptable. It has few staple and necessary ingredients, including macaroni and evaporated milk, as well as other typical spices and seasonings. But there’s so much you can do with sopas to make it more to your taste and preference.
You can start with the spices! Sure, you have evaporated milk and your regular fish sauce and black pepper. But have you thought of adding herbs and spices like ginger to the mix? This makes your soup even more fragrant, as ginger lends our soup its distinct aroma and many health benefits. It’s a favorite in the pantry, too, so doubtless it’ll be easily accessible to many who want to try this trick out!
Equally adjustable and quick to change up are the vegetables we use in our Pinoy Chicken Sopas, too. Cabbage and celery are the main staples in this milky soup, but why not try and add veggies like peas, carrots, or even broccoli? The assortment of ingredients will make your sopas even more versatile in terms of both flavor and texture.
And the versatility doesn’t end there; you can switch up your meat, too! Rotisserie chicken is always delicious and a no-fail go to when it comes to sopas. It is called Pinoy Chicken Sopas, after all. But why not add pork, like ham? Or even Vienna sausages? This will make your Pinoy Chicken Sopas arguably more exciting, and the extra ingredients will be a pleasant surprise for those who will enjoy this hearty dish.
Must love macaroni: Other Filipino macaroni recipes
Beyond just a flavorful soup, macaroni is the other star of the lovely Pinoy Chicken Sopas. It’s really easy to enjoy macaroni, because there are just so many ways to enjoy it! This pasta is just as versatile as spaghetti—perhaps even more so—in the way we use it in appetizers, main courses, and even desserts! Apart from the comforting Pinoy Chicken Sopas, here are other ways you can enjoy these small bite-sized treats.
For starters and sides, try this Creamy Macaroni Salad.
One of the most popular means of enjoying macaroni is in a deceptively light but always delicious macaroni salad. This is a perfect side to any dishes that are saucy and rich, hearty and flavorful—just like the liempo we made last Father’s Day! Indeed, if you pair this macaroni salad with your filling meats, you have for yourself a winning combo. Lady’s Choice Mayonnaise lends its sweet and tangy taste to our macaroni, which you combine with celery, pineapple chunks, and cheddar cheese for even more dynamic flavors. Just like our Pinoy Chicken Sopas, macaroni salad is the perfect marriage of sweet and savory flavors. You’ll be wanting bowl after bowl of this creamy goodness, trust us!
For a hefty main course? No Oven Baked Macaroni (Filipino Style) has you covered!
For birthday parties and celebrations, pasta is almost always a sure way to win over all your hungry guests. Sweet Pinoy-style spaghetti and creamy carbonara might be the obvious answers. But many would find the optimal party food in a hearty, meaty baked macaroni! This crowd favorite utilizes beef, hotdogs, and a Filipino classic, banana ketchup, for a dish that is sweet, filling, and overall enjoyable. I love this baked macaroni too because it makes use of summery and bright bell peppers! These crunchy veggies add not only texture but additional flavors to an already tasty treat.
And did we mention that this baked macaroni doesn’t require an oven? That’s right! Using a turbo broiler will give you just as tasty and satisfying a result as using an oven would. Make every day special with this baked macaroni goodness!
Leaving room for dessert? How about this Macaroni Fruit Salad!
Last but definitely not least — we all need a fantastic dessert to round up a scrumptious meal, don’t we? Look no further, then, than at this fruity and delectable macaroni fruit salad! Far from the Pinoy Chicken Sopas we know, this is a dessert marvel perfect for sweet endings. The use of all purpose cream will turn these small elbow pieces into a creamy delight. Plus, instead of adding ingredients like ham and celery like the first macaroni salad, here we have fruit cocktail, caong, and sharp cheese. This gives your dish a unique and tropical flavor that’s laced with both sweet and savory tastes we all love! This dish is best served cold, and you can leave it in the fridge while waiting for everyone to finish eating. Believe us when we say it will definitely be worth the wait!
Now that you have these tips and tricks, it’s time to get cooking! Follow this recipe so we can make our Pinoy Chicken Sopas together!
The recipe for Pinoy Chicken Sopas is very straightforward. It involves tossing a bunch of ingredients together in a pot and letting them cook together, incorporating flavors and absorbing each other’s unique qualities. The result is a dish that is both tremendously satisfying and oozing with warmth—perfect, no matter what kind of day you’re having!
To begin cooking our sopas, we first heat 3 tablespoons of oil in a cooking pot. Then, we sauté onion, garlic, and celery slices for about a minute. After that’s done, our chicken and hotdogs go next, alongside a tablespoon of fish sauce. We let that cook yet again for a minute more, before pouring in 8 cups of water. Let that mix boil, before adding your Knorr Chicken Cube. Then, cover your pot with a lid, bring the heat down low, and keep your pinoy chicken sopas cooking for about 10 minutes.
The next step would be to add your elbow macaroni to the pot. This pasta needs to cook for about 18 minutes, or you can base it on how you prefer your noodles. If you like them on the chewier side, you can cook them for less. Conversely, if you prefer them softer to the bite, 18 minutes should be perfect. Then, toss in your cabbage and evaporated milk, which will give your sopas that creaminess. The marriage of different flavors and smells will make your kitchen irresistible. Don’t forget to season your dish with ground black pepper and more fish sauce if needed!
When your Pinoy Chicken Sopas has been thoroughly mixed and the ingredients blended together, then your work here is done! Turn the heat off your stove, transfer the dish to serving or individual bowls, and slurp up! You and your loved ones will surely find comfort in a bowl of this milky, delicious broth.
