How to cook steak: Tips and tricks
Learning how to properly prepare steak is an essential for even the most novice of home cooks. Making your own steak at home not only saves you the money you would spend if you had to go out to a fancy restaurant to eat it. It makes your dish all the more fulfilling, knowing you put in the time and effort to make it just the way you and your loved ones enjoy it.
When learning how to cook steak on a stovetop, here are some handy tips to keep in mind! Whether you’re a first time chef or a seasoned pro, knowing these tricks will make your cooking experience all the more convenient.
Prep your steak beforehand.
Like in any other recipe that teaches you how to cook steak, one of the most important lessons to learn is to prep it before cooking. At least an hour before cooking, take your steak out of the fridge. Cooking your steak while still cold makes it a lot harder to ensure you’ve cooked it all the way through. It’s also important that you blot your steak with a paper towel in order to gather up any excess moisture. If you sear your steak on the pan while it’s too moist, then the browning and caramelization becomes even more difficult.
Don’t forget to season your T-bone steak with salt and pepper, too!
Know what doneness you’re after.
If you’re an avid steak lover like many around the world, you know there are varying degrees of doneness you can enjoy this meat at. These range from rare, with its ultra red interior, to well done, where there’s barely any pink left. The doneness of your steak depends on its internal temperature and how much you cook it all the way through. Having a thermometer on hand is a great way of knowing you’ve achieved the temperature you want on your piece of meat!
It’s important to note also that once you remove your steaks from the pan, the residual heat allows them to cook for up to 5 degrees more. Keep that in mind when you want to strike that balance between, for instance, medium rare and medium!
Let your steak rest.
Part of knowing how to cook steak is knowing when to let it rest. It’s not a good idea to cut into a steak right after you’ve finished cooking, as all of those tasty juices will escape and gather on your plate. Instead, for about 5 minutes, keep your steak rested so as to allow it to cook longer, and let all those delicious juices ruminate inside.
Now that you’ve got these in mind, let’s learn how to cook steak and its perfect sides together!
How to Cook Steak on a Stovetop
Let’s start with this recipe by making the mashed potatoes. Boil your potato halves in a quart of water for 15 minutes. Do note that you have to add a teaspoon of salt into the water beforehand! Drain the water using a colander once finished, then, meanwhile, add some butter into the still hot cooking pot. Put the potato back in the pot and mash, using a potato masher or a fork. Half a cup of creamy evaporated milk goes in next; continue mashing your potatoes until they smoothen. After seasoning with salt and pepper, you can now set it aside.
The next step would be to make the gravy. Melt butter in a saucepan and add Knorr Beef Cube for that extra flavor. Stir, then add all-purpose flour, and for about 5 to 7 minutes, stir some more. Add between ¾ to 1 cup of water into the saucepan, and continue to stir until you’ve blended all your ingredients together well. Feel free, however, to add as much water as necessary to make the consistency as thin or thick as you like! Season with salt and ground black pepper before setting it aside.
Now, it’s time to cook the actual steak! Heat a cast iron pan, then add cooking oil and butter. Once you’ve melted your butter, put the steak you prepared prior into the pan, and sear for about 2 minutes. Add the mix of rosemary and thyme to the oil so that the herbs’ flavor and aroma automatically seep in. That fragrant combination will make your steak even more appealing to all your other senses!
Continue cooking your steak for two minutes, then remove your herbs and discard. Turn the steak over and continue cooking on high heat for 4 minutes. Be sure to check the internal temperature of your steak with a thermometer every so often to see if you’re getting close to the doneness you want.
Once you’re happy, take the steak off the pan and place it on a clean plate. For about 5 minutes, let it rest on the plate alone. Then, arrange your mashed potatoes on the side and pour the gravy over your dish. Serve with some steamed vegetables on the side—and there you have it! You’ve just learned how to cook steak on a stovetop. Wasn’t that easy?
