Food is best when it’s shared. Whether you’re with an intimate group of friends or a large gathering of loved ones, the best food can oftentimes bring the best memories. The perfect plate of finger foods is always the best combination to great conversations, no matter where you are. It helps, too, that there are a variety of different finger foods to choose from! On one hand, you have the gooey, golden brown mozzarella sticks that grow even stringier with each bite. These sticks are perfect when you dip them in a delicious marinara sauce. On the other, very few people can resist the temptation that a fantastic onion ring can bring. Just like mozzarella sticks, onion rings’ golden brown breadcrumb coating make them a star side at any restaurant or home.
But what if I told you that you could get both of these timeless snacks in one terrific appetizer? These cheesy onion rings combine two of our beloved finger foods, making something delicious and unforgettable. Just one bite of these cheesy onion rings gives you both that cheesy, gooey flavor of mozzarella, as well as the savory taste of your classic onion rings! This deep fried deliciousness is the perfect dish for people who can’t seem to choose what finger food they want to eat. In fact, it proves that you don’t need to make that difficult a choice at all!
Here are some tips for making cheesy onion rings!
Onion rings and mozzarella sticks are two of the most popular appetizers and snacks out there. They aren’t super difficult to make, and their ingredients are fairly easy to source from your local supermarkets. Combining them into this dish is equally simple, but in case you’re feeling a little apprehensive, here are a few tricks that will make your cooking experience a lot easier.
Be generous with your batter — but not too generous.
The secret to good cheesy onion rings is a fantastic batter. What we want is a batter that is bursting with flavor, but at the same time doesn’t overpower the flavors of your onion and cheese. Depending on preference, some people like to spice up their batter with additional spices, which make their batter more flavorful. The recipe for the batter in this cheesy onion ring recipe is rather simple, but open to numerous possibilities that you and your family will enjoy most!
That said, it’s also important to make sure that you don’t have too much batter! To do this, shake off any excess once you dip your cheesy onion rings in, so that the extra batter is waved off. This ensures that all your different flavors are very clearly and satisfactorily tasted.
Don’t get it too greasy!
One of the reasons we love onion rings and mozzarella sticks so much is the crispiness we get when first biting into these dishes. However, you can’t enjoy this crispiness if your snack is too soggy and oily to begin with! Like other deep fried dishes, too much oil and grease can ruin an otherwise perfectly crunchy bite.
Luckily, you can save your cheesy onion rings from this problem the same way you can save it in other deep fried treats! After frying your snack until golden brown, take each of your cheesy onion rings and let them dry on a wire rack, or a plate lined with paper towels.
And don’t forget your sauce!
Your cheesy onion rings are already delicious as is, but what more when you add an extra burst of flavor? This is where your marinara sauce can come in. Tangy, bright, and with just the right amount of spice, marinara sauce is another classic way of making a quick bite more satisfying. How to Make Cheesy Onion Rings
Now that you know all of these tips, it’s time to get cooking! Follow this easy recipe and make these cheesy onion rings along with me.
The first step would be to slice your large onion into thick rings. Pair these slices up, while making sure that one piece is larger than the other. There should also be a space in between the rings where the smaller piece can fit inside the larger one. Then, slice the mozzarella cheese in such a way that it fits within this space. Sandwich the cheese between the onion rings, securing it with a toothpick. Do this until you run out of both onion rings and your mozzarella sticks!
The next step would be to heat 2 cups of cooking oil in a cooking pot. Meanwhile, combine all your dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl, including your baking powder, all-purpose flour, and salt. Mix them well, then dredge your mozzarella onion rings in the dry mixture. Place your onion rings on a wire rack before setting it aside.
Combine one egg and one cup of milk in a bowl and mix well, before pouring it into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Mix well until you’ve formed a batter, then dip your onion rings back inside it. Place it back over the wire rack for the excess batter to drip. Then, coat your cheesy onion rings with Panko breadcrumbs.
The next step would be to finally fry your cheesy onion rings! Do this one by one, frying each side until they turn a beautiful golden brown. When you’re happy with the results, flip over and do the same thing, then let the excess oil drip on a wire rack. Then, place your cheesy onion rings on a serving plate alongside your homemade marinara sauce.
